Saturday

It's been a busy week. Have not finished any knitting projects this week. I'm working on another hedgehog for Josh.

We had a sale at the shop today and it went very well. I have a lot of special orders for Monday.

I've been dying roving and people are buying it up fast. I guess I maybe should keep going.
I'll have to dye some more next week.

We had a spinning class on Friday. Suddenly drop spindles are quite popular. Matt will be busy this summer.

A large loom was delivered this week. I was able to save the box for Josh and Ellie to use as a playhouse. They will love it. I'm having Lucy(my other granddaughter) for an overnight Sunday night. She's alot of fun. We hope to see "Over the Hedge". I just hope she sleeps through the night.

Had a fun week with the animals. Callie attacked the Pug ( maddie) over some food. I bathed her and noticed her ears were infected. A day at the vet costs $300 with medications. Maddie was pretty traumatized.

I'm working on a baby blanket and I just found out the baby is due next week. I love it when this happens.

Bookclubs

I have been in a bookclub for 11 years, I joined in April 95 - we have read a book a month and doing the math I think that is 132 books plus whatever else I read in between. I moved into the neighborhood when they were in their first year. I was invited by my neighbor Sue Montgomery. I eventually moved away but was invited to stay on in the bookclub. I love a good story. Nothing better. I have my favorite authors and books. My favorite, most memorable book is "A prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving. I can only imagine what this man's brain must be like. We have read everything from Virginia Woolf to Jon Hassler, Fitzgerald and Einstein. All of the best sellers and some very unknown authors.

After a while you can determine who is going to pick a certain kind of book. Some people are better at choosing and doing research than others. Some chose a book because they liked the cover and one chose books that her husband liked and several got recommendations from their friends. At any rate we have had some good discussions and learned a great deal.

We have been through alot together as a group; divorce, death of children, spouse and parents, remarriage, birth of children, death of a group member. Many people have also relocated to other areas of the U.S. I guess we have experience all that life has to offer, good or sad. We celebrate each other when we get together because we know how precious life is.

Join a book club if you get a chance.

Happy Father's Day to everyone out there. It's a gorgeous day here in the Twin Cities. Two days of thunder storms and hot humid weather seem to have disappeared.

Did not feel well yesterday, came home early from the shop. Dan came home and had pizza and left for his Dad's house. I watched "Lady and the Tramp" and worked on a cute pattern for tea mug cover. I didn't quite finish it so I'll get to that this morning and try felting it.

I have the spinning group today at 1:00 pm which I am looking forward to. I really enjoy these people. I also did some spinning on my new lendrum last night, but I'm over twisting the yarn all the time. I hope I get better at this.

Ann had a bungee crochet class yesterday so I got some help with a vest I've tried to make two times before, this would number 3.

I'm going to dinner this evening with the family. Can't wait to see my babies.

Mid June

Business is picking up at the shop this month. Lots of tie-dyers out there. We also have a number of visiting customers from other states. They are the best, they like to visit and learn about Minneapolis while they are in town.

Thursday, Denise stopped by the shop to drop off some more storage boxes for our color coordinated yarn stashes. I'm hoping to weave some scarves and purses out of these delicious combinations. D had a little lunch and then headed home. I made some progress on weaving a new purse out of a combination of pink yarns on the knitter's loom. I love this portable little loom. It's easy to warp and carry around. Quick, projects actually get completed.

Friday, Shelley came over to pick up two packages she had sent to the shop for herself. The mailman isn't sure where she lives but suspects she lives in the back room somewhere. Some days we only get mail for S. At any rate she got some new cotton yarn. The white she wanted to wind on the warping pegs so she could go home and dye it. Last week she dyed some yarn but tied the strings so tight that it left little white marks where the dye was not able to get through so now she has to re-dye it.

Julie stopped in for some help with the shorts she is knitting her daughter - she's on a size 2 needle with cotton/wool sock yarn. It's going to take a while to knit these shorts.

One of my customers came rushing in about 4 PM and was delighted to tell me that her dye work has been picked up by some large company. She was so excited. I cannot wait to find out who it is.

Our third sunday of the month is this week. Spinning people will arrive at l:00 pm on Sunday unless they are celebrating Dad's day somewhere. This is such a great time. About 10 people show up each time. We sit and spin, chat, eat and spin again. This is a very eclectic group of people. Matt and I decided that it was mostly people without small children or any children at all that participate in this group. Interesting! They are all professionals of some sort, aged between 20'2-60's. S and I being the oldest.

Ancestry. com emailed me today with a special on Dad's day stuff. I decided to look up my dad who died in 1952. I had to look up his birthday which was 9/1924 and his death was July 1952. I was born in 1946 and my sister in 1950. He entered the sevice in 1951 so my sister does not remember him at all and I very vaguely remember him. I found his obituary which gave me lots of information I had forgotten about. He was actually killed in a plane crash in Japan while flying his last flight. He was to be sent home the next day.

I never did do a search on Ancestry.com. You had to sign up for the service and I wasn't ready to do a search yet. I have alot of information from his sister, who, just died recently in San Jose. They are all gone now.

Tomorrow is Saturday and I'm working all day. C will be in and I haven't seen her in awhile. We have our first Bungee Crochet class. I'm planning on learning some new stuff. I'll keep you posted.

I'm supposed to be at a family shower for my cousins son, but I cannot leave the shop. Saturdays are tough for these family get togethers. I miss seeing all my cousins at these things. My cousin S and I figured out that in her family alone, her parents, if they were alive, would have 55 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Amazing! I'll have to see them in August at the wedding.

Happy knitting!

A word about Pugs

I have a pug dog that is 10 years old. She is fawn with a black face and if I can figure out how to post photos I will get one on here. She is small as she was the runt of the litter. I read a great deal about pugs before I purchased her. It said their temperments were similar to golden retrievers, but clown like and loving. Likes to be a lap dog, enjoys companionship, etc. The part about golden retrievers was a lie for this particular pug. She is FEISTY!

Well, all went well at first. Maddie was very sweet and cuddly and everyone loved her. I took her to obedience training and worked very hard with this little darling. We were living in a huge house at the time (8,000 sq. ft) and she started going potty where ever she could find a spot. I figured she couldn't find a door quick enough because the house was so big, I could barely find a door. So, I gave her a break. I would walk her outside every time she had to go. Eventually I could hook her outside for long periods and she would sit on a rock in the yard. She started barking at other dogs, kids, adults, etc. This was not working very well. One day two german shepherds came walking by with their master and got a little too close for comfort for Maddie and she took after them. Bark, bark, bark, ya, ya, yah! Finally one of the german shepherds couldn't take the noise anymore and put his mouth around her neck and nailed her to the ground. She kept struggling to get free. She has so much skin on her neck that he didn't hurt her, he just wanted to shut her up.

She is quite the escape artist also. You cannot contain this animal. I would chain her up in the back hall because she would not potty train and put her in a kennel at night. Somehow she would manage to get the kennel door open by herself. She was clearly a challenge and I was questioning my sanity after months of dealing with this dog.

Eventually , I moved to a townhouse and she was no better. Smaller house didn't help. She was on a leash on the back porch but continued to bark and pee. She also developed a skin problem that made her smell terrible. This would cost more money to treat the skin problem. Meanwhile on a Christmas eve that year I heard of some puppies that had been abandoned in a box and people were looking for homes for them. I could call the station and apply for one of them. Well, I was selected as a nice person to adopt a puppy (if they only knew my ordeal with the pug they would have thought of me as a saint). My daughter picked this pup up on Christmas morning and brought her home. She is a mix lab and golden retriever. She trained easily and is a great dog. It took her quite a while to shape up the pug, but she finally won. I thought this would help maddie realize that she was a dog and needed to go outside. Well, no, I was wrong again.

I have now moved to a house in a residential neighborhood that I thought would be a good thing for the animals, my son and I. The dogs could run the yarn instead of being tied up when they were outside. I put in an invisible fence and that worked pretty well. As I mentioned before the pug is an escape artist from the get go. One day a dog came by with it's owner and she broke through the barrier and went after the dog. Surprise! So we had to change the settings so she would get a little more of a zap! You will notice that Cally, the lab/retriever, didn't do this, ever!

I did have to get a barking collar for Cally because the neighbor behind me came over and asked me to keep her quiet. I also got a very threatening letter from an unknown neighbor telling me that I should be outside more with my animals because they were acting rude to passersby by barking and charging. I couldn't reply because I don't know who this person was. When I was growing up as a child in my neighborhood, I always had a dog. I've only lived a couple years without a dog in my house. I say this because I don't understand the rules in neighborhoods today. When a friends dog showed up in our yard, when I was a child, we all knew where it belonged and shooed it home. Nobody wrote nasty letters or gave us dirty looks as they walked by. It was no big deal if someone's dog barked as long as it wasn't all night long. We all lived pretty comfortably together, got along, liked each other or at least we knew who to stay away from. We didn't have underground fences and bark colors.

Yesterday, I received another letter from an anonymous neighbor (thus the reason for this blog)telling me that Maddie, the 12" high, 20 lb. pug was becoming too overprotective and for her own good she should be confined to her yard. Apparently, her collar wasn't working and she followed this person and her dog into the street, nipping at their heels. Well, Maddie has an overbite that prevents her from actually biting someone, but she is inimidating. All a person has to do is stop and turn around and say hello and she'll go the other direction or sit for a scratch. She doesn't see or hear anymore so she just follows a shadow. I suggest these people walkon the other side of the street now that they know she might break the barrier and come after them.

I do this all the time, as a courtesy, if I'm walking Cally and know there is a dog coming up, I cross the street to avoid the tugging and barking that might ensue. I don't understand the mentality of a person (with a dog or not) coming by a house that you know the dog is going to bark at you and then become anoyed by it. Most people think my two mutt and Jeff dogs are very funny looking. Thank you very much.

Well, that's my soap box for today. Just had to get that off my chest in a long round about way.

It's cold outside

Can you believe it, June 11th and it's 57 degrees in the morning. I thought I would never get outside today cuz it was raining and cold. I started sewing my curtains and finished them. Went to the grocery store and nearly froze to death with a jacket on. In Minnesota, once you have turned the air conditioning on, it stays on. We do not turn the heat on again until October or November. Therefore, you dress to go to the grocery store. All the little girls in their Sunday dresses were hugging themselves and begging to leave.

I decided to live dangerously and bought some swordfish and tuna and will try my hand at Sushi.
I made two trips to the store for supplies. We'll have it for dinner tomorrow.

I did a little spinning on my lendrum today, just to get the feel of it. I love it but it will take a little getting used to as I have mostly used to my Ashford Traveler.

Made the Sushi tonight - it was very easy and very good. Try it, you'll like it!

My son is done with school this week, it was our first morning to sleep in and I did. It's Monday. I finished some work around the house, laundry, clearning, etc., hurried to the grocery and liquor store for Saki, shredded cheese and a bamboo matt to roll my california rolls in. The Sushi guy did not speak english and could not figure out what I was asking him. Finally he handed me a brochure on suschi and I left.

Stopped at the bank and then drove to Edina and met a friend for lunch. We came back to the shop to admire the boutique. It's getting quite nice. I was busy at work so got very little time to knit. I need to find a new pattern for a bulky yarn from Cascade. It knits 2 sts/inch on a size 17 but 4 sts/ inch on a size 11. I want something like a sweatshirt style to just pull on when I'm on the run, preferably a hood. I'm thinking the Wallaby might work.

I finished the second hedgehog. He turned out very cute. I'll get a photo up here soon. Have a great day

Finished projects

I completed two projects this week. It's been slow at the shop due to graduations, etc. Typical for this time of year so I was able to get some knitting done. I finished the hedgehog (fibertrends pattern) on Wednesday night at Dunn Bros. Coffee shop but noticed he was lopsided ( I forgot to wrap and turn somewhere). So, I tore him out and finished him again last night. Actually, it might be a her because it has pink quills. It is drying as I write. One thing I noticed while working this pattern, at the end they say to stitch the opening closed with another color of yarn but the opening is so small you wouldn't be able to stuff it through that hole anyway. The first one I did ripped apart in the machine so I stitched this one up completely. Now to stuff it, I hope I can cut a hole in the bottom where I just used the yarn to finish it and then stitch that back up. Makes sense to me.

My friend Sue stopped by last night. She's done teaching for the year and was coming home from their year end party. She and her friends are going to France next week staying in a Villa for a couple weeks. Sounds very nice.

The other project I completed was the Elizabeth bag by Black Sheep. It turned out real cute but the handle itsn't felting down as much as I like so I maybe would do a different handle next time. I'm in the process of shaving it down with my bic razor. It works great.

I bought a new Lendrum spinning wheel this week. I love it. I opened it last night and got it together with help from my friend Shelley (on the phone) and was able to spin. It is smooth. I wish I could get a dealership from him. I started spinning the cormo that I bought at Shepherd's Harvest - it is quite spongy like but it spins easily. I'm going to spin a two ply, I hope.

I also finished some curtains for my friend (3rd project). I'm working on the second set of curtains for a bathroom. Then I have some sewing for myself and a baby blanket to stitch up.

It has been unseasonly hot in Minnesota for the last couple weeks and suddenly it's dropped for a high of 60 degrees this weekend. Go figure. It is so true, wait for an hour and the weather will change in Minnesota. I bought plants this week so I thought I'd get them planted this weekend. I have to work later today.

Today is National Knit Out In Public Day. So we will be sitting outside knitting today at the shop. It should attract attention. Another attraction on our strip mall is a new Massage salon which is in question. I've talked to the landlord about it and she's checking into backgrounds. Seems very suspicious to me. More later on that subject.

The PETITE BOUTIQUE is up and running this week. I have jewelry from Pamela (Gutherie)semi precious stones set with silver, Denise has her knitted Beaded pendant bags, a new artist from Florida brought in her hand felted jewelry with semi-precious stones and beads, and Jennie The Potter brought in her Mugs and bowls. They have sheep with yarn and spindles on them. We also have many shop samples for sale.

I'm working on another little bag on the Ashford Knitter's Loom. I love that little loom. It is so easy to use. I have a commission to make one for Pamela's mom, so I have to get this one finished.

Went to play with Grandchildren Tuesday night. J was jumping off the chair (really stepping) but he thought he was jumping and then E decided to get in the action and climbed up (she doesn't walk yet) and bounced. They are so goofy. J is talking alot now and is a little hard to catch all the words. They are so much fun!

More later
As you can see I've been a little busy and haven't blogged for a few days. I'll get better at this.

Monday Morning
It was a busy weekend. Made it to the Edina Art Fair twice. Once with Shelley, just to browse and the second time to buy a beautiful carved wooden basket. Weather was gorgeous. Worked on Sat. and the shop was busy. Lots of tie dye projects going on out there. With Pamela Marie's help we got the jewelry set up in the boutique. She was very helpful. Saturday evening I finished knitting the Elizabeth bag by Black Sheep and got it felted. Looks great. Had a little trouble felting the handle but otherwise it looks great.

Sunday I worked on pulling weeds out of the perennial garden, cleaned the garage and dog kennels, made dinner for my daughter and boyfriend and ended the evening watching Ocean's Eleven with my son. It was a good weekend.

I'm also working on sewing some curtains for a friend and will hopefully finish those up today. The grandchildren are on there way over for a visit and then I work at 3 PM.

June 1st

I had the first Knit Group at the Dunn Bros. coffee house near my home last night. Only one person joined me and that was my friend Noelle. We had a great time catching up on life over the past 6 months. I am planning to have a knit- out at the Dunn Bros. every Wednesday nite from 7-9 PM through June and then we'll see how it grows. This is a delightful old home on Hwy. 4 that was restored by the city and is used for the Dunn Bros. coffee. I'll try to get a photo up here soon.

I am currently knitting a Fibertrends groundhog. He is very cute and I had finished him and threw him in the washer to felt. When he came out he looked like "road kill". Somehow one side of his body came apart and unraveled. Poor thing. I'm working on a newone. The first one was brown galway with a fur type yarn on the back side. This one will be a cream body with pink fuz. I'm going to tie knots in this one.

I'm also working on a baby blanket for a friend whose baby is due in July. I started making a lace pattern, very simple pattern, out of a multi colored cotton yarn but everytime I got to the 5th row I would miss a stitch and be off. After three tries I gave up and went to a cotton chenille varigated in pinks, blues and white. This will be soft and cuddly and may actually get done by July.

I'm also working on a shop sample sweater - cotton again in a City Sheep pattern. A child's pullover. It was in Mission Falls cotton originally and I'm not carrying that yarn right now so I decided to redo it. I'm up to the arm holes on that project.

I'm also working a shawl with domy heather, another lace pattern out of the "Knitted Shawls "book. It's lovely but has also taken a few tries. It is for a dear friend who picked out the yarn so I hope to finish it by the time it gets cold outside again, which may be tomorrow. Who knows in Minnesota.

Minnesota weather is so unpredictable. One day it's 87 and the next 40. No kidding. You must always keep your knitting by your side in case the temperature drops because you can get several rows knit before it warms up again. Enough for tonight-more tomorrow.
